Fire, Theft or Accident in Your Business: What Happens Next?

9/16/2011 11:10:00 AM
No one wants to experience fire, theft or an accident at work, but if it does happen and you have the right Orlando business insurance in place, you can at least breathe easy knowing that you aren’t going to lose everything.

If you do need to make a claim, follow these simple steps.

1. Contact your insurance company or agent immediately. Report any theft or vandalism to police.
2. Locate your insurance policy and read it again to determine what your responsibilities are.
3. Protect your place of business from further damage by making temporary repairs or removing anything dangerous. If work items or machinery have been damaged, keep a record of everything. Photograph the scene and keep the pictures on file.
4. Provide all documentation (or copies) to your insurance provider: police report, detailed list of damaged or stolen items, photographs etc. Depending on the type of claim, you may also need to provide income statements and details of business activity before and after the incident. If you are forced to close for a period, include ongoing expenses such as utilities.

A major theft or damage that affects your business is never easy to deal with, but if you have Orlando business insurance in place and are prepared, you can at least ensure that your claim is dealt with as quickly as possible.
