Do your employees know how to use your fire extinguishers?

The best fire safety tip is prevention. You can help prevent fires from occurring in your building, by taking safety precautions when using heaters, kitchen appliances, and the storage of liquids and combustible materials. Even with the best plan, accidents do happen. Make sure that you have the right types of fire extinguishers available and just as important is to make sure that several of your team members know how to use them correctly. In addition, there should be members of your organization who are thoroughly trained in extinguisher location, appropriate use, and maintenance schedules as well as general fire safety with regard to materials, storage, fire exits, and prevention. The US Fire Administration (USFA) recommends that only those trained in the use of extinguishers should use them.

Here's a quick video on how to use fire extinguishers for you to share with your staff and some review points below:

Extinguishers have different classifications depending on what types of fires they are designed to fight. Here are the six basic types:
  • Class A: Cloth, wood, paper, rubber and ordinary combustibles
  • Class B: Grease, gasoline, oil and other flammable liquids
  • Class C: Plugged in appliances and other electrical fires
  • Class D: Flammable metals
  • Class K: Cooking and other types of oils typically found in kitchens
  • Multi-purpose: Good for Class A, B and C fires

Fire spreads quickly and safety is the most important thing to protect - lives first and property second.
